FAVELA PAINTING
After witnessing the immense social divide between people living in the favela’s and other parts of the city they imagined the possibility of building a bridge of understanding through art. Their dream was to plaster and paint an entire hillside favela together with the inhabitants. The project would give the favela population an opportunity to reshape their living environment with colorful art while improving the houses. Job would be created and local economy stimulated. Haas&Hahn; painted their first mural covering 3 houses in Vila Cruzeiro, one of the city's most notorious slums. In 2007 they returned to paint Rio Cruzeiro. A collaboration with tattoo artist Rob Admiraal. The painting took 8 months to complete. In 2010 Haas&Hahn; painted Praça Cantão, 33 houses in the favela called Santa Marta, for which they received worldwide recognition. Praça Cantão became one of Rio’s official tourist attractions.
Since then, Haas&Hahn; have continued bringing projects to Vila Cruzeiro.
Haas&Hahn; never abandoned the dream of realizing their mega-project, a whole hillside favela. Throughout the years they produced a multitude of sketches, paintings, designs and 3D studies exploring both the architectural shape of favelas and possibilities for using it as a canvas for painting.
